Orcas in Península Valdés

Have you ever seen an orca baby nursing?

Lactation is energetically costly for the orcas, and this kind of images help the researchers to compare the calf’s growth and the mother’s condition and will reveal in the future if the mother is getting enough food to support both herself and the calf.

Península Valdés, Argentina, is one of the few places in the world where you can also witness the incredible hunting technique of orcas: intentional stranding. These intelligent predators launch themselves onto the shore to catch sea lions and elephant seals, an extraordinary behavior rarely seen elsewhere!

Best time to see them? Between March and May, when orcas patrol the shores of Punta Norte.
